UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION WINNEBA has, over the years by virtue of its consistent excellence in academia, been touted the best and,undoubtedly, the favorite destination for Senior High School Leavers all over the country and Africa at large. The prominent premier teacher training institution in the country is credited for the pursuance of job oriented programs that academically fortify students for the job market. The school has to her name many prominent personalities occupying sensitive portfolios, home and Abroad .
Several educational,as well as, business related programs are pursued in the University; Diploma, Undergraduate and graduate programs.
Though there are tens of programs studied, this article, however, will accentuate on BACHELOR OF ART FRENCH EDUCATION and everything one needs to know about it before making a definite decision.
THE FRENCH DEPARTMENT is, undoubtedly, the best, not only in University Of Education, but among all other French Departments in other Universities and COLLEGES OF EDUCATION in Ghana. It offers Undergraduate, Graduate programs including DIPLOMA IN FRENCH EDUCATION, B/A FRENCH EDUCATION, M.ED FRENCH, M.PHIL FRENCH PHD .With the graduate program, one can either specialize in Literature,Language or FOS( FRENCH SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES.
The FRENCH DEPARTMENT is embodied in the FACULTY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES. It shares same Faculty with ENGLISH AND LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT. The most interactive department, with other departments such Mathematics,Science,Biology, ICT Chemistry and a lot more, is located in the South Campus.
ACADEMICS.
With regards to academic works, the French Department has four possible options one can settle for after getting B/A FRENCH EDUCATION as a program of study.
A candidate will be at liberty, with few flexible restrictions, to choose to study courses of varied combination.
It will interest one to know that, with the acceptance of French as a program of study in UEW, you are privileged to undertake one of the following choices ;
a) FRENCH : This choice will concentrate much on French. But it doesn’t mean that one won’t study other English related courses, but one will study more of French with other common educational courses.
b) FRENCH (major)AND ENGLISH AS A MINOR . Here, one will have to drop some of the French courses and choose few courses from the English Department. It takes a good pass in Literature in English at the WASSCE to be qualified for this combination.
c) FRENCH (major) AND LINGUISTICS AS MINOR . With this combination one will, just like the previous combination, drop some French courses and settle for a course or two from the Linguistics Department. One doesn’t need any relevant previous knowledge for this combination
d) FRENCH AND GERMAN . As mentioned previously, the German Unit is embedded in the French Department and with this combination, you will study French as major and German as minor. Just like the other previous one, you do not need to have any requirement for this combination.
EVENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT.
The department has several events that see to the practice and learning of French.
1. ATELIER
Ateliers are like workshops that take place on regular basis to engage students to practice and consolidate whatever is learnt in class.
The department, as already touted as the most interactive on campus, has several platforms, events for the promotion of the study and practice of the language.
Every student, is at liberty and free-will to join any atelier of his/her choice.
The department has interactive ateliers which includes
a) ATELIER CHASON : This group is uniquely identified as a workshop that teaches members interesting French Songs. These songs are rehearsed and performed choreographically.
b) ATELIER THÉÂTRE : Just as the name predicts, the members of this atelier are trained to perform drama in French. They act short movies in French.
c) ATELIER JOURNAL : This is the platform that train its members to have mastery over reading. The reading of news, poems and a lot more…
ASSEF WEEK CELEBRATION
ASSEF is an acronym for ASSOCIATION DES ÉTUDIANTS FRANÇAIS. It is the biggest association in the French Department. It’s an association for everyone in the French Department. It annually elect leaders to run the affairs of department on behalf of the students.
ASSEF, yearly, reserve a week for the organization of events to celebrate the department. Games, Quiz and other entertaining events are often organized to climax this ceremony.
LA JOURNÉE SPORTIVE : As part of the ASSEF WEEK celebration, sporting activities are always organized among members for the purpose of exercise. This helps in engaging members and promote the study of French..
INTER-UNIVERSITY QUIZ COMPETITION : ASSEF has also liased with the French Embassy in Ghana to organize quiz competitions among other Universities that study French in Ghana. The latest of which was held on campus saw UEW FRENCH DEPARTMENT, UNIVERSITY OF GHANA FRENCH DEPARTMENT , MOUNT MARY FRENCH DEPARTMENT competing.
CAREER SEMINARS
The department often liaise with prominent stakeholders and motivational speakers to educate members on the possible job opportunities available for students studying French. This helps graduates prepare adequately for the job market.
BENEVOLENCE CLASSES.
These are extra-tuition classes organised by students of advanced levels to help, mostly, L100 students to understand better courses not well understood at lectures. This is entirely free of charge.

A YEAR ABROAD
Language , just like other program of study, is best learn when practiced. For this reason, the department in liaison with the government of Ghana, has collaborated with two Francophone countries, The Republic of Togo and The Republic Of Benin, to on yearly basis admit final year students of the University for further studies in the University of Lomé and University Of Benin, respectively. This comes every year when students, after their semester internship, make choice between Togo and Benin, for close to a year séjour. Students, in their respective countries of studies, will be put on monthly allowances for their upkeeps.
SCHOLARSHIP ABROAD.
In order that academic excellence is encouraged, the department in partnership with the French Embassy , secured scholarship for outstanding students of the department to undertake their Internship Abroad. For the 2020/2021 Academic year, three (3) Students are sponsored to have theirs in German.
COIN FRANÇAIS
This is a weekly live radio program held on the campus radio station, WINDY BAY to engage French students. This is often done purely in French. Lectures and students are always the panelists.
DINNER AND EXCELLENCE AWARDS NIGHT.
A day is reserved for dinner and awards. Applications are often opened for students to vier for nomination for several categories including, ASSEF MOST INFLUENTIAL STUDENT, ASSEF MOST FASHIONABLE, STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR, STUDENT MEDIA PERSONALITY, BEST PERFORMING ATELIERS..
